KPU nursing students, staff show off cooking skills

Group serves up meals for Ronald McDonald House B.C. guests

Kwantlen Polytechnic University nursing students and staff recently prepared a meal for Ronald McDonald House British Columbia.

This week, nursing students and faculty from Langley’s Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) served up special meals at Ronald McDonald House British Columbia for nearly 200 guests.

The catch: most of the ingredients were donated by Langley and Surrey-area McDonald’s restaurants. This is the third year for the dinner, which takes place once a semester.

Thirty-two bachelor of science in nursing students split into four teams to create a menu based on a particular theme.

Using the ingredients of Big Macs, Happy Meals and Fruit ‘n Yogurt Parfaits, the teams developed four savory and cultural three-course dinners with Asian-fusion, Italian, Greek and Mexican influences.

“These dinners are an incredible way for our nursing students to interact with and learn from families who have a seriously ill child,” said KPU nursing faculty member Connie Klimek.

“It allows the students to tie their classroom experience to community support in a meaningful way.”

“We are very happy to help Kwantlen Polytechnic University support Ronald McDonald House Charities,” said Langley McDonald’s franchisee Ron Knight.

“This is such a fun event.

“We’re always excited to see the creativity the students bring to the dinner and the innovative menus they design with our ingredients.”

Along with the donation from the Langley McDonald’s restaurants, other ingredients were also provided by McDonald’s franchisees Ron Renaud (Langley), Tom Latrou (Surrey), Cargill, Martin Brower and select local businesses including Terry’s No Frills Grocer.
