A Brookswood Secondary School alumnus has won a Business in Vancouver 2018 Forty under 40 award.

Kylie McMullan, founder of Finch Media, received the title for her marketing and communications firm that aims to help businesses develop and share compelling stories.

“It’s a fun job, every day is completely different and it changes so much,” said McMullan.

McMullan said her career jump into public relations was spontaneous. She had recently graduated from the communications program at Simon Fraser University and wasn’t sure what to do next.

“I was at dinner with my parents shortly after graduation and we were talking about PR. The couple dining next to us said ‘My daughter’s in PR, and everyone going into PR should go to Humber College.’”

And that’s exactly what McMullan did, then later founded her own company, Finch Media.

McMullan started Finch Media four and a half years ago, and was surprised to learn she’d been selected for a 2018 Forty Under 40 award.

“It’s fantastic, I’m honoured and humbled. After seeing who else is on the list, it’s terrific to be a part of the list.”

Business in Vancouver highlights the achievements of young entrepreneurs, executives and professionals in B.C.

McMullan currently lives in Vancouver but her father lives in Langley, so she visits occasionally. McMullan is pursuing a PhD with a focus in marketing through the KTH Royal Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.

McMullan also co-authored the first Canadian-based public relations textbook titled Canadian PR for the Real World which is being used in post-secondary schools across Canada.

All recipients are under 40 years old and have demonstrated excellent business, judgment, leadership and community contribution.

The Forty under 40 awards and gala dinner takes place on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019 at the Vancouver Convention Centre.
