The Times received numerous awards at the recent conventions of both the B.C. and Yukon Community Newspapers Association and Canadian Community Newspapers Association.
Both the provincial and national industry associations met at the River Rock Hotel and Casino in Richmond from April 28-20.
The Times won first place in the CCNA Best Holiday Edition category, for one of the Christmas gift guides published last December.
“The Times’ unique take on Christmas was a fresh approach to an annual tradition. Each submission was a joy to read and some of the stories on the holiday season were definitely heartwarming,” said judges.
Times editor Frank Bucholtz won second place for national editorial writing at the CCNA convention, for an editorial on the ongoing debate over the long gun registry and how it was affected by a minority Parliament.
The Times was named second in its class for best overall newspaper in the BCYCNA general excellence awards. Last year, it finished first. This year’s winner was sister newspaper The Peace Arch News of South Surrey/White Rock.
Reporter Monique Tamminga won second place in investigative reporting for a series on the outbreak of the Parvo virus at a Langley City pet shop, and how Langley City reacted to the outbreak.
Carol Addy of The Times’ creative services department won second place for collaborative ad campaign. Her ad for Brothers Too! Wine Makers was cited by judges as having “an opportunity to stand out from the crowd.”
Langley historian Warren Sommer won third place for his story, published for Remembrance Day. His story recounted his visit to battlefields anf graveyards in Belgium and France in search of the final resting places of Langley soldiers killed in the First World War.
