Being safe and being prepared in case of emergency is imperative, as many of the natural disasters happening around the world shows.

It’s part of the motivation behind a safety event held this past Sunday at Willougbby Town Centre.

The Sept. 10 event was open to residents and retail tenants in and around the Langley mall, but it was also open to the general public, explained Erinpatrick Williams from Phoenix Fire Life Safety.

The Langley company hosted the event and partnered with a number of other businesses in the safety industry. The festival, which attracted upwards of 70 people, offered hands-on training with fire extinguishers and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), a how-to for CPR, and information from a series of safety stations.

It was a free event, including a free barbecue, Williams said. But donations were collected for the BC Professional Fire Fighters Burn Fund, as well as GlobalFire, a charity that helps firefighters and paramedics in developing countries.

The event raised $225 that was shared between the two charities.

There are a few members of GlobalFire from Langley, including Burnaby firefighter Erik Vogel, in attendance. Vogel said he and members of the GlobalFire team are set to head to Nicaragua – a 7,000-kilometre trek – in early October to deliver an ambulance and other used firefighting and rescue gear to Chinandega as part of Operation Nicaragua.
