52nd Langley Walk takes place this Sunday in Fort Langley

Event begins at 12 p.m., with walk to start at 1:30. Five or 10-km routes can be traversed through walking, running or cycling.

What better way to spend a May afternoon than by exploring an historic Langley community with your family and friends, while getting some fresh air and exercise?

Presented by the Township of Langley and the City of Langley, the 52nd Annual Langley Walk returns to Fort Langley on Sunday, May 4 for this year’s celebration of community and healthy living. The event is free and people of all ages are invited to walk, run, or bike the five- or 10-km routes that will start and end at the Fort Langley National Historic Site. The Walk will go through the village of Fort Langley, along the Fort-to-Fort Trail, and over the new Bedford pedestrian walkway over the CN railroad tracks.

“This is a great opportunity to walk through a beautiful neighbourhood that is a great part of our province’s heritage,” said Township recreation programmer Barbara Andersen. “As well, it is the perfect chance to get on your feet, get moving, and interact with others in the community.”

The Langley Walk starts at the Historic Site, at 23433 Mavis Avenue, at 1:30 p.m., but participants can get registered on-site and enjoy pre-event entertainment starting at 12 p.m. All those who finish will receive a commemorate crest, and a free snack, activities, and more entertainment will be provided after the Walk. Walkers are asked to bring their own refillable water bottles.

All walkers are eligible to win draw prizes, and awards will be presented to the oldest walker and the elementary school, secondary/middle school, organization, and family with the most walkers.

The Langley Walk is a tradition that spans more than half a century. Established in 1963, the Walk was founded by Pete Swensson, Langley’s recreation director. A strong believer in the benefits of physical activity, Swensson encouraged the public to “Walk away your ills, instead of taking pills.”

It was established long before the Sun Run and other popular walking events. The original Langley Walk was 28 kilometres long. It extended from Aldergrove Park, along River Road, to Fort Langley, then on to City Park, and thousands of people participated.

Participants still turn out in droves to enjoy the Langley Walk, which is held the first Sunday in May – rain or shine - in various locations throughout Langley Township and City.
