It was a day set aside to promote volunteering and giving back to our community, and Aldergrove stepped right up to the plate to show its good and “giving” spirit.

Giving Tuesday brought local charities together on November 28 to inspire charities, businesses and individuals in Langley to join forces and share a commitment to support local causes that are making a difference. Whether you choose to make a donation, volunteer your time, help an elderly neighbour or work as an advocate and inspire others, Giving Tuesday is a movement everyone can take part in.

Both the Aldergrove Legion and Langley Events Centre hosted “Get Up and Give” pancake breakfasts, at which everyone was welcome to stop in for a plateful of pancakes and sausages and warm themselves up with good food and company.

Spokesperson Karen Long said several groups and individuals dropped by Tuesday morning and left cash donations, which totaled $351, as well as food items for the Food Bank.

“It helps create awareness of the need for volunteers by charitable organizations in our community,” said Long, who is also on the Volunteer Langley board.

She also credited the many volunteers who helped out, including members of the RCMP and Fire Department, along with a large crew from Wagner Hills recovery centres in north Aldergrove and south Langley.

Brandon Anderson organized the team from Wagner Hills, all of whom were eager participants in the morning’s fundraiser.

“We are all residents of Wagner Hills, from both the men’s and women’s campuses, who wanted to give back to the community that is so supportive of our dedication to recovery (from substance abuse),” said Anderson.

“Every one of us has enjoyed this morning, giving back to our community.”

Mayor Jack Froese split his morning between the two events at Langley and Aldergrove, and said the turnout and support was much appreciated by all.

The #LangleyGives charity community includes organizations such as Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation, Langley Hospice Society, Langley School District Foundation, and Volunteer Langley.

Special thanks go to the Otter Co-op, JD Farms, Bonetti Meats, Krause Berry Farm and Estate Winery, Save On Foods Aldergrove, Boston Pizza, Milsean Shoppe, and McDonalds Aldergrove for their assistance in supplying food items.

Organizers are also asking the community to help promote Giving Tuesday by going online and using the hashtags #GivingTuesdayCa or #LangleyGives and sharing their stories on how they are giving back to their favourite charity.
