Art and athletics have been combined and captured in metal panels that are being displayed at McLeod Athletic Park, as a legacy of the Royal Canadian Legion Youth Track and Field Championships.

The panels were officially unveiled June 8 at a ceremony with the artists and members of the Royal Canadian Legion in attendance.

The artwork designs that were waterjet cut into the panels were created by local artists Ryley Bredenhof, Melissa H. Clark, Brad Johnson, Sylvie Roussel-Janssens, Kay Slater, Rosemary Wallace, and Kendra Yoshizawa, with direction and participation from the Township of Langley.

More than 25 artists submitted close to 40 drawings as part of a public art competition held in 2015.

In total, ten designs by seven artists were chosen by the selection committee. The designs chosen represent a cross section of artistic styles and field sport subject matter.

The inspirational panels illustrate some of the major sports and activities enjoyed at McLeod Athletic Park Stadium, which hosted the Legion Youth Track and Field Championships in both 2013 and 2014.

A legacy contribution from the championships made the production of these artworks possible.
