Friday evening marks the first annual Brookswood Village Night of Lights, hosted by the village’s merchants association. If other events held in the thriving South Langley neighbourhood are any indication, this one is sure to light things up.

Emma Stewart, realtor with Remax Treeland Realty, is one of the organizers of the new celebration which will take place at Brookswood Plaza Mall, on the west side of 200th Street just north of 40th Avenue.

“We really wanted to start bringing back some events to the community; bring back that village feeling,” Stewart said. “Summerfest does really well, this past summer was the 17th year. So we thought why not. Christmas is the perfect time.”

The event is already getting a lot of interest, according to Stewart. The new Night of Lights has had more than 10,000 people on the Facebook event page.

SuperSave Gas, which is on the corner of the plaza, is sponsoring the lights on the community tree which will come to life at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The activity isn’t just about the tree however. Things kick off at 5:30 with free hot chocolate under a tent by the tree, free cookies at the bakery in the plaza and the mascot from the Langley Rivermen will come out to spread some cheer. A few merchants in the plaza will also be offering customer appreciation specials as part of the event.

Prior to the lighting, people can take a hands-on approach with the Brookswood tree.

“The first 150 people are going to be given the chance to hang an ornament on the tree,” noted Stewart. “I think it will be kind of fun having just the bottom five feet of the tree decorated.”

There will also be the ability to take photos with Santa Pawz at PetFude.ca where donations for the Langley Food Bank will be collected. Food bank donations can also be dropped off with staff from RBC at the tree.
