Aman Johal of the Fort Langley National Historic Site demonstrated how fur traders would sing songs to make long canoe trips and heavy loads easier to bear. Volunteer voyageurs Manon Couto (R) and Michael McGarry (L), visitors to Derby Reach Regional Park, mime paddling a canoe as they sang along during an event last February.

Tap your feet and clap to the beat of French Canada at Fort Langley National Historic Site’s annual winter festival Vive les Voyageurs this weekend, Jan. 21-22, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Enliven a grey January weekend with folklore and culture of the voyageurs and fur traders who lived at 19th-century Fort Langley. Learn a Métis dance, attend a French 101 lesson, join in on a Fur Trade wedding and fill up on delicious maple taffy and poutine while listening to live Voyageur-style music.

On the Saturday, at 1 p.m. come see an ice sculpting demonstration and take your picture with Parka the mascot.

This festival is free as part of Canada's 150th birthday celebrations.
