The Langley Community Farmers’ Market is celebrating local makers, bakers and growers with their inaugural Gumboot Gala on June 11 at the Langley Seniors Resource Centre Banquet Hall. Tickets are $42 and are available online at www.lcfm.ca.

This isn’t your regular glitzy gala.

While brainstorming ideas for their annual fundraiser, the Langley Community Farmers’ Market decided to look to their roots and create something a little more down to earth.

The inaugural Gumboot Gala, happening June 11 from 5 to 11 p.m. at the Langley Seniors Resource Centre Banquet Hall, is an opportunity to get dressed up in your greatest gumboot garb to celebrate local makers, bakers and growers.

Proceeds will go to the BC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupon Program, an initiative that provides $15 coupons per week for 16 weeks to participants to purchase local food from farmers’ markets.

Each year, $560,000 in coupons are handed out, meaning $560,000 in locally grown food is given to those who need it most, and $560,000 is funnelled to local farmers who grow food close to home.

According to the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets, the program benefits 47 B.C. communities, 49 farmers’ markets, 79 community partners, 308 pregnant women, 726 seniors, 848 farmers, 3,355 children and 3,500 families.

Langley Community Farmers’ Market manager Cherise McGee says their goal this year is to get more people involved and spread the word about the benefits of supporting local food providers.

“We really want to make an impact and show the community what we do,” she said.

“And the gala is just a really good time.”

The Gumboot Gala features a reception, dinner and dancing,  a live auction, 50/50 and balloon draw.

The dinner is being donated by local food vendors, including JD Farms for the turkey, Otter Co-op for the ham, Republic Coffee Roasters for the coffee, Culinary Blossoms for the tea and multiple fruit and veggie vendors from the Langley Community Farmers’ Market.

There will also be prizes for the most creative gumboots worn.

Tickets are $42 and can be purchased online at www.lcfm.ca under the “special events” tab, or $40 at the door, if any remain.
