Langley fundraising gala raises $215,000

Funds will help the organizers buy a hi-tech incubator for the local hospital

Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation’s annual fundraising gala exceeded expectations – organizers will soon be able to purchase a hi-tech incubator, for which there they were raising money.

City and Township mayors were among those who participated in the Giving Hearts fundraising gala with about 290 other guests at the March 5 event.

“The event was a huge success. Everyone had a wonderful time,” said Terra Scheer, communications manager at the hospital foundation.

Four ‘dinner with the mayor’ packages were sold at $6,500 each along with two other packages. The ‘dinner at the Indian Affair’ package was auction-off at above-asking value, and the a ‘helicopter tour package’ went for $5,000.

The fundraiser night started with a $20,000 donation from an anonymous donor.

Azim Jamal, motivational speaker and author of the book, The Power of Giving was the keynote speaker at the annual fundraiser.

As of Tuesday, Scheer was able to confirm that $215,000 was raised, which is enough to buy the incubator.

“Our future lives with our youth. That’s why we wanted to raise money for our youngest community members,” said gala founder and co-chair Manjit Gill.

With this success, the Giving Hearts community has raised more than $565,000 in support of health care at Langley Memorial Hospital since the gala’s inception in 2019.

Scheer thanked the participants and said that the event was community-driven. Sheila Reimer, events manager, too expressed her gratitude and thanked attendees for their “gift of time, advocacy, and leadership in supporting local health care improvements.”

“Everyone did such a wonderful job inspiring everyone that night. We are really appreciative of how the community rallied and came back to the event to support health care,” Scheer concluded.

The hospital foundation’s next event, ‘Monet’s Garden Spring Gala’ will take place on May 14 at Coast Hotel and Convention Centre in Langley.

Also on tap, in benefit of the hospital, is the ‘Hope Grows Here Charity Gala,’ which will take place on March 26. The charity event will be hosted by Langley City Mayor Val van den Broek and proceeds from the event will go towards the construction of Foundry Langley, a youth wellness centre.
