Fight Like a Girl could sound like a slogan for the U.S. presidential election, but it’s the name of a fundraiser in Fort Langley and on several computers.

The Fight Like a Girl breast cancer run takes place Oct. 15 along the Fort to Fort Trail and organizers, a running club calling themselves Run Like a Girl, have a virtual run online that allows participation from around the globe.

“We are completely sold out with our event and sadly we cannot accept any more runners. We have sold out every year, this is our fourth year. Each year we have grown our number and this year we have had to cap it at 155 runners. We also set up our fundraising events with a ‘virtual’ option. This is where anyone who lives anywhere in the world can register for our run,” explained Run Like a Girl’s Courtney Burt.

So far the runs and virtual runs have raised $12,000 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

The organizers are local, but with technology, the reach is international.

“We have chosen to use the Langley Fort to Fort Trail because it is where we are started running, we have been running that trail for years, its close to where we live and provides a terrain that is for everyone, strollers, dogs, families etc. there is great access and its scenic running beside the Fraser river and through the beautiful forests,” Burt explained. “We are trail runners, and we find a better connection with the surrounding mother nature rather then running on a road through streets.”

With the 155 registered runners for the Oct. 15 event and the virtual community, there’s 255 taking part this year.

“This gives everyone around the world the opportunity to support the cause and run with our Run Like a Girl community,” she added. “It gives the flexibility for those to run on any day they want anywhere they want. Often groups will form their own small local run groups to participate in the event virtually where they live. It’s really really great and has been a huge success.”
