A burger and beer night is being held at the Fort Langley Pub on Jan. 17 with the hopes of raising enough money to help a local man attend the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi next month.
The event, which runs from 5 to 7 p.m. and costs $25 at a ticket, is being organized on behalf of Gary Hewitt. The price includes a burger and beer.
Hewitt's daughter Jessica is a 27-year-old short track speed skater who will be competing at the Winter Olympics for the first time.
She was born in Langley but the family moved to Kamloops when she was seven.
At 18, she moved to Calgary to train while she attended the University of Calgary and after just missing a spot in the 2010 Canadian team, Hewitt moved to Montreal to continue her training as that is where most of the national team trained.
Hewitt still has grandparents, her father and an uncle who live in Langley.
She was nominated for the Canadian team back in August and in November, the Canadian skaters qualified for Sochi. The team leaves next week for Europe, where they will train until the Games begin Feb. 7. They run until Feb. 23.
Hewitt will compete in the 500m event and the 3,000m relay event.
