June 26 seminar in Langley explores ‘successful aging’

Topics include maintaining health and resources available to support seniors living at home

What exactly is “successful aging?”

Find out on Monday, June 26 at Langley Seniors Village, where Fraser Health Home Health is offering a “successful aging” information session from 1 to 3 p.m.

This session will focus on topics to help seniors, their families, and care providers learn what they can do to maintain their health, and what resources are available in the community to support seniors living independently, at home.

Registered nurse and case manager Shannon Parsons will conduct the session.

“It’s geared towards our seniors and their caregivers,” Parsons said, regarding the event. “We are going to have an open discussion about how (seniors) can maintain their health in the community, and what we can do to help them do that.”

Successful aging boils down to living a healthy lifestyle, Parsons noted. “It’s extremely important. You want to try to maintain your body and your mind and it (the session) really focuses on what community resources are out there to help support them to do that. Quite often, people don’t know what’s available to them — there’s get-up-and-go classes, exercise classes, even just home health itself.”

This especially applies to B.C., where 18.3 percent of the province’s population is 65 or older, compared to the national average of 16.9 percent. Seven of the 10 Canadian municipalities with the largest share of people over age 85 are in B.C.
