Those who missed the original grand opening of the brand new Timms Community Centre had another opportunity to see all that the multi-use, $14.3 million facility had to offer on Saturday.

During an April 9 open house at Timms, attached to Langley City Hall at 20399 Douglas Cresc., free tours and demos were offered, as well as raffle giveaways and prizes, free games, and a youth fundraising barbecue.

Roughly 1,000 people at the open house which also featured free classes and activities, including Tai Chi, Zumba, volleyball and bridge, making full use of the Timms Centre’s state-of-the-art amenities.

“We were thrilled by the turnout at the Open House,”Langley City Mayor Ted Schaffer said. “It was great to see Langley residents coming out to support the new community centre.”

The City of Langley encourages people to take advantage of their free seven-day passes, which expire at the end of April.

More than 2,000 passes were given away between January and April of this year.

“If you’ve already used your pass but want to continue at the Centre, there are some great options available,” Schaffer said. “From 10-visit to annual passes, there is something for everybody. Come into the Timms Centre to sign up or receive an annual pass for less than $1 a day!”

Membership-wise, the centre has already grown significantly, with 1,750 new memberships since its initial opening in February.

The new centre is more than three times the size of the original one-storey facility that at one time was the Langley City Library.

That building was demolished to make room for the new 35,000 square foot LEED silver facility.

Among the features:

A gym with retractable bleachers and a division curtain to allow for multiple programs.

On the second floor is a three-lane, 121-metre walking track. Complete with glass railings, the walking track offers views of the gym area below with a range of sights to the north and west of the facility through the expanse of windows.

Other amenities include a weight room with new cardio equipment; a fitness room with a wooden spring floor; programs for youth, seniors, families, new immigrants, and persons with disabilities; a games room; and a community kitchen that connects to a multi-purpose room for entertaining.
