Langley educator walks the talk on diabetes

Author has Story Walks, readings and author signing for her children's book

A Langley teacher's book is intended to not only help teach kids how to overcome adversity but also normalize people with medical conditions, such as diabetes, being in children's books.

As November marks Diabetes Awareness Month, Surrey-based author and math educator in the Langley district Rashda Munawar is taking part in three events in conjunction with her book "Think Big: Believe, Achieve, and Soar High."

"Think Big" weaves the story of Maria, a young girl with type 1 diabetes navigating everyday lfe's challenges. This representation resonates with the author's personal journey, as Munawar’s daughter was diagnosed with it at age four.

The book’s message of resilience and self-belief, shown through the characters of Mr. Big and Mr. Small, teaches children how to handle self-doubt and embrace a growth mindset, she explained.

Munawar has story time and author signing at Indigo Langley at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9.

Families are invited to a Type 1 diabetes awareness event at Clayton Surrey Library at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 20. This event will feature an interactive book session and a discussion on diabetes awareness.

With the help of Langley Literacy Network, two local schools in Langley will feature "Think Big" in Story Walks throughout November, promoting literacy and diabetes awareness.

“November is a chance to highlight the importance of type 1 diabetes awareness, and Think Big shows that all children, regardless of their challenges, can achieve greatness,” said Munawar.
