Local activities for Seniors’ Week focus on fitness and getting older residents to think about their health.

Seniors’ Week runs June 1-7.

“Seniors play such a huge role in our community and this is our way of thanking them,” said Hannah Bennett, recreation leader with the Township.

There are a few activities during the week but there won’t be the Seniors of the Year presentation at the Langley Seniors Resource Centre.

Walked

This year again the Township has the Walk with the Mayor on the morning of June 1. Meet at lelem Arts and Culture Cafe by 9 a.m. The walk is about 30 minutes and ends up back at the restaurant, 23285 Billy Brown Rd., in Fort Langley, for coffee and conversation with the Township mayor and council. For information, call the Township Recreation, Culture and Parks Division at 604.856.2899.

Fit-ness

A unique event is CarFit, offered by the Township in conjunction with the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists. People 60 and older can book 20-minute appointments between 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. on June 4. This free program is a review of how people and their vehicles fit, from an occupational therapeutic point of view. The therapists will offer tips on how to be more comfortable and safe behind the wheel. Call 604-533-6144 to book. The clinic is in Aldergrove.

Tea time

The Seniors’ Spring Tea will be at the Aldergrove Kinsmen Community Centre, 26770 29th Ave., on June 7. The free event runs 1 to 3 p.m. and is presented by the Township.

Tea, sandwiches, and strawberry shortcake will be served by local high school students who have volunteered to greet the guests.

Douglas Fraser will provide the entertainment. A band leader, vocalist, banjo and tenor guitar player, Fraser hails from three generations of professional entertainers and has been on stage since the age of three. He was part of the jug band resurgence in the 1960s, has played jazz in concert coast to coast, and has been on many television shows, movies, and radio shows throughout the years.

Children from the daycare within the community centre will also be singing a few songs.

“The Seniors’ Network has done much of the organizing and a lot of local businesses have donated to the Tea,” said Bennett. “We encourage local seniors to come out and enjoy themselves at this Seniors’ Week event,” Bennett said.

To register, call 604-533-6144.

Get moving

Those aged 50 and older are invited to pick up a free Active Legacy Pass, which will give them to access to a variety of activities throughout Langley from June 1 to 7. The pass is a legacy of the 2014 BC Seniors Games, and events will be put on by the Township and City with assistance from the Brookswood Senior Centre, Fraser Health, Langley Community Planning: Seniors in Action, and the Langley Seniors Resources Society.

The passes are available through local community recreation centres and municipal offices.

The pass allows people to take part in a range of activities including tai chi for diabetes, yoga, meditation, Walkey Hockey, Seniorcize, jazz dance, aquafit, badminton, reflexology, line dancing and more.

Contact the City or Township municipal offices for more, or check their websites (tol.ca/events and city.langley.bc.ca) for complete details about times and locations.

City lunch

City seniors with the passes can also stop by the Langley Seniors’ Resource Centre for a tour and complimentary lunch on June 2. Langley City provided a subsidy for this event. People must contact the centre in advance to take part.
