Langley seniors centre created a packed calendar for Seniors’ Week

Several events planned between June 4 and 10 to recognize local seniors and provide fun activities

The Langley Senior Resource Society Centre is throwing a week-long party to celebrate Seniors Week June 4 to 10.

“Boy, oh boy! This is the biggest Seniors Week we’ve ever done,” Smitty Miller said.

She’s the program manager at the seniors centre that serves both the Township and City.

“We have a number of VIP speakers, a big announcementevery day, special workshops, amazing food, fitness classes, free movies and popcorn and much more,” she said.

Each day features Kate Ludlam, the centre’s executive director, making an announcement at 10 a.m. The Monday, June 4, announcement is the Senior of the Year.

“The announcements will be be about funding, new initiatives for seniors, special grants and partnerships,” Miller explained. “You’re invited to attend, have a cup of coffee, and learn about all the exciting things happening at LSRS.”

Hear ye, hear ye

Each day during Seniors’ Week, there will be a 10 a.m. announcement by Langley Senior Resource Society executive director Kate Ludlam. Settle in for coffee to hear about new initiatives, funding, outreach projects, and more. The first announcement on Monday, June 5 will be the introduction of the Senior of the Year.

Got time for a coffee?

Drop in for a tour between 10:15 a.m. and 1 p.m. between Monday, June 5, and Friday, June 9, receive a complimentary muffin and coffee, and enter to win a free Langley Senior Resource Society centre membership.

For the love of art…

Everyone can check out the seniors’ artworks displayed at Timms Community Centre during the month of June in celebration of Seniors’ Week.

Audrey Bakewell Art Walk

Langley Seniors Resource Society Centre, 20605 51B Ave., is the home of the Audrey Bakewell Art Walk. Tour the collection, meet the artist and pick up some souvenirs.

Young storytellers

Enjoy the art work of Blacklock Fine Arts School students in the Langley Senior Resource Society centre lounge all week. These beautiful photo collages were part of a storytelling project spearheaded by the Langley Human Dignity Coalition last year. It was made possible with grants from the City and Township. Elementary school students from Blacklock connected with seniors from LSRS, interviewed them, and created the collages.

Speaking of seniors

Anyone who is interested can stop by the centre at various times for special guest speakers.

• Langley MLA Andrew Mercier: 10:15 a.m. on Monday, June 5 as a guest on the centre’s online talk show.

• B.C. Seniors’ Advocate Isobel McKenzie will speak virtually on current issues in seniors advocacy from 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. on Friday, June 9. There will be time for Q & A.

• Cloverdale-Langley City MP John Aldag hosts a townhall at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 10. Refreshments provided.

Snooker

The centre also has one of the nicest snooker parlours in the community. Four well-kept tables are open for play every day the centre is open. During seniors week, people can stop by to try them out Monday, June 5, to Friday, June 9, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

FVRL Playground Showcase

The local public library has more than great books. Check out their innovative collection including Sphero Bolt, Cubetto robots, puzzle cubes, telescopes, birdwatching backpacks and even bat packs. Library staff will show seniors how to use it all and even how to sign these items out to use at home. No pre-registration is required but the event happens at the Langley Senior Resources Society, 20605 51B Ave., on Monday, June 5, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Open for play

There’s table tennis from 10:15 a.m. to noon in the main hall on Monday, June 5, and Wednesday, June 7.

Jammin’

Bring an instrument and take part in the weekly jam session from 10 to 3 p.m. on Monday, June 5. Or just sit back and listen to the music.

All levels welcome

Fit and Fab is a fitness class for all abilities with the focus on aerobic fitness, strength, flexibility and balance. Try out out from 9 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6 and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 8.

Take a seat

Chair yoga is in the main hall on Tuesday, June 6 from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m.

Boot scooting

Join Darlene for line dancing from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6.

More fitness

Try out fun, non-strenuous carpet bowling from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6 and again on Thursday, June 8.

Advance Planning – Financial Workshop

Joint bank accounts, wills, power of attorney and representation agreements. What are they? Who should have them? No pre-registration is required. Stop by the Langley Senior Resources Society, 20605 51B Ave., on Tuesday, June 6 starting at 1 p.m. to learn more.

Get creative

Paint a wooden bookmark in a craft session from 10:15 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, June 7.

Laughter Yoga

Using improv games and silly laughter exercises, the aim is to find our laughter whether laughing at something funny or intentionally using laughter as an exercise. No need to sign up in advance, just stop by the Langley Senior Resources Society, 20605 51B Ave. ready to experience this unique form of exercise on Wednesday, June 7, from 11:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m.

Silver screen

The movie starts at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7. Enjoy The Upside, with Kevin Hart, Bryan Cranston and Nicole Kidman. Based on a true story. Free popcorn.

ICBC Enhanced Road Assessment

Learn what to expect if called for a re-examination road test and how to prepare. This refresher on rules of the road and pedestrian safety takes place at the Langley Senior Resources Society, 20605 51B Ave., on Thursday, June 8, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., and there’s no need to register in advance.

Interwoven

Join the social fibre arts club (knitting, crocheting, embroidery, etc.) from 9 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 8 in the sun room. It’s all about conversation, friendship, and creativity.

Get creative

Visit the centre’s art class from 10:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, June 9, and see what the members create.

Voices raised in song

The seniors centre has a choir and it’s performing 11:15 a.m. to noon on Friday, June 9. Go ahead and sing along.

Step lively

The centre is having Rock Step Swing Dance Society lead a swing dance lesson starting in the fall. Join in the sneak preview from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 9.
