More than a dozen Roots and Wings Montessori Grade 6 students spent last Wednesday morning making more than 300 sandwiches to feed the homeless and those in need at Vineyard Church's meal day.

Going through 12 loaves of bread, several pounds of cheese and stacks of deli meats, the students from Langley's only outdoor school, felt a sense of accomplishment and community when all the sandwiches were made and brought to those less fortunate, they told the Times.

The idea came from Grad 6 student Callum Burnett-Glen, with a little help from his special education assistant Susan Vandergooot.

"He thought it would be nice to help the community," said Vandergooot.

Many of the people who come to the Vineyard on Wednesdays are homeless, others are seniors at risk, some are refugees.

Having the students meet the people who ate their sandwiches helped remove some of the misconceptions and fears they may have had about people who live on the streets, said their teachers.

The experience was so rewarding for the students, they asked if they could come back to make sandwiches again.
