Two Langley women have decided to take action to help youth who have no safe place to go locally.
Jen Peters and Seora Tracey are hosting a huge party Saturday, Oct. 8 called “Let’s Raise The Roof For Our Homeless Youth.”
They’ve organized bands and hit the doorstep of local businesses to collect raffle items.
The party is at the home of the Longriders Band (14128 Colebrook Rd.)
They will be joined on stage by Johnny Tornado and The Stormriders, Intoxicated By Nature, Lawless and Coldwater and the Bootleggers.
Master griller Tom Glynn from Hog Party Pigs will be in the house to keep people’s bellies full. There will be raffle prizes, 50/50 and door prizes. People are welcome to stay and camp for the night.
The women are hoping to raise more than $15,000, which will go directly to the youth homelessness task force.
“No middle men, no admin charges, all money goes directly to the youth,” said Peters.
The pair have organized fundraisers in the past, but this one feels especially important.
“These children are our future,” said Tracey.
“They need a centre, a home, so they aren’t couch surfing. They need a place that has a kitchen, showers, a safe place they can feel at home at.”
The alternative to addressing this issue is that teens “fall through the cracks and get lost in drugs, lost to the streets,” said Peters.
Since beginning this journey, they said everyone has been 100 per cent supportive.
“A lot of the band members are parents, the business people in Langley have been amazing because they know how important this cause is,” she said.
In fact, when they tell people there are more than 160 youth in Langley who have been homeless at some point or another, it comes as a shock.
“You don’t realize it if you don’t see it,” said Peters.
Tickets have been selling well and they are expecting many to show up at the door, too.
