Already more than $148,000 has been raised for this year’s Relay for Life taking place overnight on Friday at McLeod Athletic Park from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
This will mark the 10th year teams will again camp out at the park, taking turns walking, running or strolling around the track all night.
There are 61 teams of 10 registered, said this year’s Relay organizer Jenn Schroeder.
“We are one of the top three fundraising communities in B.C.,” she said.
This year Langley will have raised $3 million for the Canadian Cancer Society.
The first lap of the evening is very meaningful and is for the survivors.
Another emotional and powerful part of the evening is the lighting of the luminaries at sunset, which are special candles placed in bags that carry the names of cancer survivors and loved ones lost to this horrible disease.
Langley also has the largest contingent of student teams to come out, adding a fun element to the evening.
There will be a photo booth and Absolute DJ will play music and is providing a dance floor. Randy ‘Elvis’ Friske will be providing entertainment as well.
“We really appreciate all the community support. We are all in the same fight to eradicate cancer,” said Schroeder.
Last year, teams in Langley raised a record breaking $290,000.
All funds raised go to the Canadian Cancer Society which supports research, services and support.
Cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada, with cancer rates set to increase by 60 per cent of the next 20 years.
