Joren Blundell, 2, holds a card thanking people for supporting a bottle drive in memory of his brother, Keian.

People came from all over Langley, from as far as Chilliwack and as close as Maple Ridge, with vehicles loaded from front to back with bottles and cans to help with the first annual bottle drive in memory of six-year-old Keian Blundell at Langley Events Centre on  Nov. 15.

In total, $4,036.23 was raised, with all the money going to help families affected by childhood cancer, said Keian’s mom, Chantal Blundell.

A large amount of the money raised came from Abbotsford teachers and students who have spent the last couple of weekends collecting bottles in their neighbourhoods.

“It was our first event in honour of Keian — the first of many,” said Chantal. “It was an extremely emotional day for Ryan and I.  We are so appreciative of all our supporters that have helped us to not only spread the word, but also to help us to beat our original $3,000 goal by over $1,000.”

Last year, Keian delivered 300 toys to BC Children’s Hospital and Canuck Place Children’s Hospice only two weeks prior to his passing. Keian died of cancer on New Year’s Day.

The Blundells have set up Keian’s Holiday Wish Toy Drive to carry out their son’s wishes. This year, they hope to surpass the 300-toy mark.

“It means so much to see others embracing Keian’s spirit; his legacy will live on in us all,” Chantal said.
