Fort Langley’s Nadine Mross won the Miss Fraser Valley 2011 title on the Canada Day long weekend.

She was crowned the winner of her region at the annual charity event, which took place at the Chief Sepass Theatre in her hometown.

Mross was one of 41 contestants for the pageant which raised $21,205 for the Cops for Cancer organization.

Mross, a rowing coach, joined Miss B.C. not only to become a positive role model for young women, but also to do what she encourages her students to do, as she explains in her bio at the www.missbc.ca: “I encourage youth to find their potential by stepping out of their comfort zone.” The Miss B.C. pageant gave her the opportunity to do just that.

With her title, Mross intends to continue to promote healthy fitness and nutrition habits for everyone, but particularly for youth.

The Miss B.C. Pageant is a developmental program for young women and every contestant receives professional training in areas such as modelling, stage presence, manners and etiquette, self esteem, interview skills, public speaking, self defence, and assertiveness.

Previously, the pageant courted controversy when it allowed a mother of two to enter the competition.

Most pageants would not have permitted that, but Miss B.C. is committed to being inclusive and empowering to women in this province.

This year’s pageant introduced two new categories: Mrs. B.C. and Mrs. Lower Mainland, for those contestants who are married.

Once again, the Miss B.C. show has opened doors and created opportunities for women who would not have been able to participate in a show like this elsewhere.
