Learning the ins and outs of financial planning, legal care, fraud prevention and taxes for seniors can be daunting, which is why Langley Lodge is hosting free public seminars on these topics for seniors this winter.
The Langley Lodge Winter Seminar Series, running from January to April, is focusing on the topic of seniors protecting finances.
Now in its second year, the series’ focus is to provide free education on issues of seniors and aging, primarily concerning health and wellness.
The 60 to 90 minute winter sessions are offered on the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Langley Lodge, and feature expert guests speakers at each event.
“Because we are in the business of seniors’ care we are able to get top-notch speakers to come to our facility to present on topics that are interesting, informative and relevant,” said Debra Hauptman, executive director of Langley Lodge.
“The sessions are usually presentation style, but they are very open so many times people come with questions already prepared.”
The first session is Jan. 17.
Langley Lodge is a non-proift seniors’ residential care organization serving Langley City for over 35 years.
The organization host the monthly seminars as a public service for seniors in the area.
Since the series began in 2010, Hauptman says the Langley Lodge has received large support from seniors in Langley and surrounding communities, with seminars running at full capacity.
“It appears there is a need for them,” she said. “It’s something we can offer to the community beyond those in our residential care.”
The January session features a financial planning advisor to speak about estate planning and general tax matters involving estates.
In February, the Public Trustee’s Office will have information on financial and personal care management for adults.
March welcomes a tax accountant to provide information on seniors’ tax credits and income/pension splitting.
In April, the BC Elder Advocacy group will discuss seniors’ fraud schemes and how seniors can protect themselves from common scams.
