New Langley Meadows playground a true team effort

The new Langley Meadows playground was officially opened on Tuesday, at a ceremony attended by hundreds of people.

A new playground at Langley Meadows Elementary is truly the result of a sustained community effort.

It was officially opened on Tuesday at a ceremony attended by hundreds of people.

The new playground came about when parents and staff found out that two old playgrounds were going to be dismantled. Parent Advisory Council president Laura D’Alva and her executive began organizing a series of fundraising drives,  from bottle drives to casino nights, and helped wrap Christmas presnts at Willowbrook Shopping Centre with the Langley School District Foundation.

But they needed to raise $100,000 — a monumental sum. The Foundation helped them with appeals to community orgganizations and businesses. Walmart, McDonalds, Home Depot and Langley Rotary all helped out, and Coast Capital Savings provided a $25,000 grant to the foundation for the playground.

Parents pitched in to help erect it, and saved $5,000.

Students at the school are happy — they again have a place to play. And the community’s efforts are visible for all to see.
