Kids and adults alike enjoy berry good samples of treats at the Blackberry Bake-Off

It was a tough decision to make, but when Luke Cleaveley picked up a blackberry square to taste, he instantly knew he made the right choice.

The four-year-old was one of dozens of children — and adults, too —who sampled a variety of delicious home-baked goods at the annual Blackberry Bake-Off and Open House on Aug. 15.

Hosted at the Derek Doubleday Arboretum by the Township of Langley and the Langley Environmental Partners Society, the event features a competitive blackberry baking competition, and serves as an opportunity to educate the community on invasive species, particularly the Himalayan blackberry.

Bake-Off Results:

1ST place: Ken Lorenz with chocolate covered blackberries

2ND place: Amy Friesen with blackberry buckle with all fruit blackberry peach sorbet

3RD place: Darlene Sherwin with a blackberry tropical salsa

Peoples’ Choice Award: Carla Harrison with blackberry lemon bars
