About 200 people took part in the City of Langley 17th annual Tri-It Triathlon on Sunday at the Al Anderson Memorial Pool at 4949 207 St., swimming in the pool, then biking and running through the surrounding neighbourhood.
There were 140 youth aged five to 14, 45 adults, 10 teams of up to three people, and six 60-or-better competitors in the “Dave Hall Classic category” which was added to acknowledge the passing of former Council member Dave Hall, who was a key advocate of the Tri-It event that encouraged novice competitors to have a go.
The number of adults was down slightly this year while the number of young competitors was up compared to previous years, said Christine Daum, recreation supervisor at the City of Langley.
“More kid are getting into it, which is great,” Daum said.
“Lots of families, too.”
Eleanor Dueck came all the way from Tsawwssen to compete for the first time.
Her mother, Dayna said the Langley event was a pleasant experience.
“It’s so nice, it’s so laid-back,” she said.
“We’ll be back.
Like many sign-waving parents, Jaime Lamont from Surrey was there to cheer on his kids, Kate 11 and Cameron, 9 with a sign that said, simply “I made a sign.”
“I had to make a sign,” Lamont said he was told.
“So I made a sign.”
He had another sign claiming “free wi-fi” was near.
His kids just laughed.
The Tri-It event was first launched in 2000 by the City of Langley and the City firefighters as a fundraiser for the burn fund.
After about a decade, the firefighters moved on to other fund-raising initiatives and the City maintained the annual event as a community fun run.
