Public invited to walk benefitting Langley cat shelter

Organizers are encouraging people to bring the family, bring the dog, and bring an appetite to the annual walkathon

Dogs can walk for cats at the annual fundraiser for the CARES cat shelter. It's on Sunday, Sept. 15.

"Everyone is welcome," said Clive Ellis, with the shelter. "Bring children, the family dog and a good appetite."

The funds raised support the small animal welfare group based in Milner.

"As we grow in numbers of kitties under our care, so do the expenses," he explained.

Those taking part in the walk are asked to collect pledges for CARES. Donations can be made online or on a pledge sheet available on the CARES website. People can register online in advance or at the walk site as well. There is a minimum $20 pledge to participate in the walkathon.

The walk takes place between noon and 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15 at Derby Reach Regional Park, 21801 Allard Cres., by the Fraser River in North Langley. The walk starts at 1 p.m. followed by a barbecue.

"The walk will be approximately five kilometres along the riverbank," Ellis added.

People can find out about the shelter and its work.

"We will have a variety of prizes, a complimentary barbecue, and tables with items for sale. There will be plenty of people on hand to answer any kitty-related questions," he said.

The no-kill shelter has an adoption centre in the PetSmart store on the Langley Bypass. It looks after cats for the remainder of their lives if no adoptive homes are found.

The shelter is always in need of volunteers for various duties. From April to November, the shelter receives an influx of kittens and would like to hear from anyone interested in fostering in their homes. Fosters can be asked to take in expectant cats, moms and kittens, or kittens. Having cats spend time in foster homes means they are better socialized and more likely to find adoptive homes. CARES provides food and medical care to foster cats. To learn more contact marian via email at mjhaney@shaw.ca or go to the CARES website caresshelter.com.
