RCMP handing out free wheel locks on Saturday

Police and ICBC have a tent at WalMart parking lot in Langley on June 11 from 10 - 2 p.m.

Find out if your vehicle is among the 'most stolen' models and you could get a free steering wheel lock this Saturday, June 11 at the WalMart parking lot.

Langley RCMP, in partnership with ICBC, will have an information kiosk on site, detailing how to prevent theft of and from vehicles. Additionally, volunteers will be checking parked vehicles and issuing Lock Out Auto Crime notices, with suggestions on how car owners can protect their property against theft.

The kiosk will be set up for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

According to police data, there were more than 50,000 vehicle break-ins last year in Metro Vancouver.

"Let’s not give thieves any targets in Langley," said Langley RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Holly Marks. Make sure you remove all your possessions from your vehicle.

Thieves will break in for anything from expensive electronics to loose change. Remember not to leave garage door openers in sight and lock all the doors as you head off to do your shopping, police advise.

Motorists are also advised to be mindful of their surroundings when leaving their vehicle.

Don’t assume purses placed in the trunk or GPS devices in the glove compartment are safe because they are out of sight.
