REMEMBRANCE: Langley City gathers to honour veterans

City hasn't had a legion branch for several years but still hosts Nov. 11 service

A large crowd filled Douglas Park for the annual Remembrance Day service in Langley City Monday.

Just as they started to honour two minutes of silence, light rain started falling, stopping at the completion of the two minutes. Nature would hold off on the rain until the ceremony closed and people made their way to the cenotaph to place their poppies on the wreaths that had been laid their during the morning ceremony.

Following a traditional program, the City service under the auspices of the Royal Canadian Legion included words from Pastor Derrick Hamre.

He explained why it remains important to honour veterans and military members "whose courage and bravery and resilience lays down an example of all of us today."

"May the the stories of courage and sacrifice help us to live lives worthy of those who served, committing ourselves to both peace and justice," he added.

Emcee Jim McGregor noted that each year, there are fewer and fewer veterans able to attend Remembrance Day ceremonies but it is still important for Canadians to take part.
