Take a plunge, lace up your skates, or let the little ones expend their energy during a number of events and activities being offered by the Township of Langley to welcome 2019 and kick the year off with an active start.

The New Year will be celebrated with a brand new event when the first ever Polar Bear Plunge is held at the Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre’s Otter Co-op Outdoor Experience. Guests can be part of local history and start a new tradition with family and friends by taking part in the first annual plunge at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 1. Cost is $3 for the all-ages event and registration is limited. Register at RecExpress.ca.

Those who would like to get in the pool – not necessarily polar bear style – can take part in public swims at the Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre, located at 27032 Fraser Highway, on Monday, Dec. 31 from 12 to 4:30 p.m. and Tuesday, Jan. 1 from 2 to 6 p.m.

New Year’s Swims will also be held at the W.C. Blair Recreation Centre, 22200 Fraser Highway, on Dec. 31 from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Jan. 1 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

At the Walnut Grove Community Centre, 8889 Walnut Grove Drive, visitors can swim on New Year’s Eve from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on New Year’s day between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. or from 6:30 to 10 p.m.

Guests can usher the New Year in with a splash during Holiday Family Pool Fun, when all ages are invited to join Township play leaders in the pool for games and loads of activities. Holiday Family Pool Fun will be offered at both the W.C. Blair Recreation Centre and Walnut Grove Community Centre on Monday, Dec. 31 and Tuesday, Jan. 1, from 1 to 3 p.m. Regular admission rates and rules apply.

If skating is more your style, glide into 2019 with a couple of Public Skate sessions.

The ice will be open at the Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre on New Year’s Eve, Monday, Dec. 31 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and on New Year’s Day, Tuesday, Jan. 1 from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

The George Preston Recreation Centre at 20699 - 42 Avenue in Brookswood will host a New Year’s Eve skate from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31, and a New Year’s Day session on Tuesday, Jan. 1, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Regular admission rates apply to all skating sessions and locations.

Children aged two to 12 can celebrate the New Year by bouncing, jumping, running, playing, and dancing the night away at the Kids’ New Year’s Eve Bash. Being held Monday, Dec. 31 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Lynn Fripps Elementary School, the event includes games, a dance party, a hot dog and water, as well as an early countdown. Cost is $10 per child and registration is required at RecExpress.ca.
