Saturday all about mushrooms in Langley Township

Oct. 15 events in North and South Langley will focus on fungi.

Mushrooms are the focus of two events in Langley Saturday.

Walking the Mycelial Web: An Ecologically-Focused Mushroom Foray starts at 10 a.m. at Derby Reach park, 10716 Allard Cresc.

This participatory, field-based workshop is geared towards all levels of experience, covering:

• core skills for mushroom identification;

• mushroom names and meanings;

• fungal ecology;

• culinary and medicinal applications;

• ethical harvesting practices;

• traditional and contemporary uses; and

• cultivation and mycoremediation.

Participants will come to understand the roles that fungi play in symbiosis, succession and regeneration, and how we can ally with fungi to increase resilience in our living systems and communities.

Register by emailing outreach@drbipa.org.

‘World wood web’

Meanwhile, starting at 9:30 a.m. and running until 11 a.m. at Campbell Valley Regional Park, visitors join a park interpreter to learn how to identify mushrooms without harvesting them, and investigate the role of fungi in the underground “world wood web.”

Enjoy a 30 minute indoor slideshow followed by a slow trail walk.

Ages: 15-plus. Cost: $8 adult, $4.25 youth/senior.

Register: MetroVancouverOnline.org or call 604-432-6359 and quote barcode 6469.
