Firefighters were among the first responders forming teams for Toque Tuesday's fundraiser in Langley.

The latest edition of Toque Tuesday was a big success, with 18 teams playing street hockey in the fundraiser that collects money and warm clothing for people living on the streets.

This was the 14th edition of the event and the second held at the Langley Events Centre, said Tim Baillie, who is normally a Langley Township councillor, but for Toque Tuesday is the designated Supreme Commander.

"I gotta say, this was the most successful in 14 years," Baillie said after the event, which took place on Feb. 4.

It had the highest level of donations in both cash and goods of any event so far, Baillie said.

Teams included groups of first responders, as well as social service organizations.

With so many teams taking part, there were up to four games of shinny being played at a time.

Toque Tuesday collects warm clothing, especially items like hats, socks, and gloves for people living on the streets.

All cash donations are divided equally between Encompass Support Services Society and Pacific Coastal Resources Society.

The Toque Tuesday followed Sock Saturday at the Vancouver Giants game the previous weekend, when the team collected $2,324 and more than 1,000 pairs of warm socks for the same causes.

Baillie said the fun tournament was a great event. He usually likes to have bad weather for the event, to remind people how terrible conditions outside can be for people without a stable, warm home to go to.

This year, he noted, it was so cold that someone broke a ball against a goal post.
