VIDEO: Earth Day celebrations at Douglas Park in Langley City

Fourth year for annual event

Earth Day was celebrated at Douglas Park in Langley City.

It was the fourth year the day has been marked in Douglas Park, in a joint initiative of the City of Langley’s citizens-led Environmental Sustainability Committee (ESC), in partnership with Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS).

Nichole Marples, executive director of Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS) said “for us, it's Earth Day every day,” a time to “do what you can do in small increments to make a bigger impact.”

“Here in Langley, we are very blessed to have a plethora of natural environmental areas [where] we have a lot of groups that take time to steward these areas” Marples said.

Earth Day volunteer Ellen Hall told the Langley Advance Times abut the story behind one of the  upcycle competition entries, a stylish purse made from blue jeans by Kateryna Antonyk,  a textile student at Fleetwood Park Secondary in Surrey.

“This is a bag from a girl that came from the Ukraine,” Hall explained.

“She wore these jeans when she came to Canada, and because they were so important to her, she didn't want to throw them out, she wanted to keep them, and so she recycled them into this jean bag.’

A free, family-friendly event, Earth Day  featured 20 interactive booths, focusing on environmental awareness and promoting connection with nature. Explore topics like native plants, bats, honeybees, cycling, ocean conservation, pollution prevention, pet waste disposal, and more.

They included Hub Cycling’s free e-bike demos, Mountain Equipment Company reconditioning of  Blundstone workboots or other leather boots, recycling your old electronics with the Electronic Recycling Association, as well as food and healthy snacks, and tours of the nearby Douglas Community Garden.

Earth Day’s 2025 theme is  "Our Power, Our Planet," calling for everyone to unite around renewable energy with a goal to triple clean electricity by 2030.

First held on April 22, 1970, Earth Day has grown to includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by EarthDay.org including an estimated 1 billion people in more than 193 countries.

In Canada, the online campaign is at earthday.ca.
