Willoughby Slumber Yard

A family-friendly haunted house has been set up by the Lenko family at 8156 211th St.

The public is invited to stop by between Oct. 26 and 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. and again between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Oct. 29 and 30, and 4 to 10 p.m. on Oct. 31. Donations are accepted for the Langley Food Bank.

“Come visit the Willoughby Slumber Yard where witches, ghosts, monsters and ghouls are waiting to meet you,” said Erin Lenko.

Brave souls can check out Frankenstein’s lab creations, as they tiptoe past spiders and watch Helga create her witch’s potions.

“Marvel at the lights timed to Halloween tunes,” she added.

Erin’s father, Don Scott, does the cutouts of spooky figures, and it’s a family effort to pull all the elements together to make a display and haunted house.

The house at 20140 53rd Ave. and the house two doors down is collecting donations for the food bank at its display. The Twister Sisters display is normally in operation from 4:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. until Halloween.

They have been doing Halloween displays for years. They started the twisted sisters theme four years ago. Each year their display has a theme.

Warren family

The Warren family has a display at 20294 50th Ave.

Brookswood boo

People are already stopping to chat with the Steger family at their Brookswood home.

They’re curious about the severed limbs and corpses that are starting to occupy the lawn at 4683 204th St.

The Stegers host one of the community’s biggest Halloween displays and have been taking advantage of the rain-free weather to start putting out the items.

“We have new things every year and try to change stuff up, with approximately 15 floodlights 25 to 30 different items, like coffins, electric chair, guillotine, ghouls, skeletons, rats, bats, cats, Frankenstein, executioner, etc., and throughout the week and weekend our friends come over and help scare people,” Dorian Steger explained. “We might change outfits from things that were static to real people. You just never know. We do a display in our garage as well with animatronics because they cannot handle moisture well. All in all lots of fun for everyone and we try and add some humour to the display, too.”

Dorian and Pauline, and their son, Taymen, have put on a display for the past five years.

They spend the weekends leading up to Oct. 31 beavering away in the garage to ready the displays, then typically start putting them out the weekend before Halloween.

“We have purchased all our display items ourselves and donate all our time for free,” he said. “We have fun doing it and every year it seems to get better and better.”

Anyone wanting to stop by is asked to bring a non-perishable food donation for the Sources Langley Food Bank.

“We have been averaging about 700 lbs. of food and about $1,500 cash donations each year, give or take,” he said.

The display is open 5 to 9 p.m. from Oct. 22 to Oct. 31. He cautioned that it may be a bit too much for younger kids.

“I would say on average we get over 1,000 people coming through the display from the time it opens until Halloween,” he said. “One of these years we may have to actually take a count. All I can say for sure is that on the weekends, it is a constant flurry of people, and on nice nights during the week we get quite a few, too.”
