Dressed in a sea of purple, students at Langley Christian School walked through Murrayville on Friday to raise awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), and to honour a beloved former teacher at the school.
The second annual Walk for ALS was held as part of a provincial fundraising and awareness campaign for the progressive neuromuscular disease, which causes nerve cells to die and muscles to paralyze.
Former LCS band teacher Dave Alexander, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2016, was in attendance at the event. Several of his past students gave speeches and thanked him for his service to the school, and community.
Coordinated by teacher Jon Mayan and Grade 12 student Jeremiah MacAdam, along with the Grade 12 Leadership class, the Langley walk raised more than $7,000.
Proceeds from the Walk for ALS go to the ALS Society of BC to provide support for people living with ALS and to invest in research to make the disease treatable, not terminal.
