For bargain hunters in search of scarce parking spots at the Langley Senior Resources Society centre, volunteer Doug Wells was a genial, welcoming presence, directing arrivals at the annual garage sale on Saturday, May 4.

“Almost everything is inside,” Wells explained to one driver, who was worried about the small number of items on display under temporary fabric awnings outside the centre in the 20600 block of 51B Avenue.

“There’s very little outside.”

Wells, a retired RCMP officer, was wearing the original RCMP-issue high-visibility vest and hard hat he was issued when he was working in the Lower Mainland.

“They’re about 30 years old,” Wells said.

There was an RCMP crest on his hard hat.

While he was trained to direct traffic, Wells spent most of his career as a community policing officer.

“Traffic was not my forte,” he said, grinning.

Wells was among dozens of volunteers who helped guide bargain hunters through the centre between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

For a few hours, the interior of the 18,000 sq. ft. facility at 20605 51B Avenue was transformed into the ultimate garage sale, with spacious meeting rooms, foyer, and main hall packed with bargain donated by supporters to assist the centre.

Centre executive director Paul Goldberg said it was the biggest fundraiser of the year for the facility, which provides a wide range of senior-oriented programs.

“Generating donations and money from fundraisers is very important.” Goldberg said.

“We have some government funding that we get, but we are required to generate additional revenue through fundraising to balance our budget.”

The ninth annual community garage sale at the centre featured thousands of gently used and new items for sale, a 50/50 draw and a raffle.

Breakfast and lunch were offered in the centre cafe, with a barbecue outside.
