VIDEO: 'Disappointing' turnout for Aldergrove Legion swap meet

Contributions down by nearly one-half

This year's swap meet organized by the Women's Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion Aldergrove branch raised just over half the amount of last year.

Organizer Myrtle Clift  reported the net total was $2,244 from the Saturday, May 10 event at the hall, at 26607 Fraser Hwy., compared to $1,245 the year before.

"It was the worst we've ever had," Clift commented.

"Very, very disappointing."

Since the swap meet started, in 2009, the auxiliary has usually scheduled it for the end of April.

"But we thought, because of the [poor] weather, that we have it in May," Clift explained.

Clift said there will be another swap meet, next year, around the same time.

"We're going to do it just one more time and see what happens. But if it doesn't work out, then maybe we'll be like the Abbotsford swap meet and quit."

For now, the plan is to see what happens in 2026.

"We're not giving up yet," she told the Langley Advance Times.

"We're still here for the community and for the veterans."

A raffle was also a disappointment, raising about $300 after expenses compared to the year before, when it was $875, Clift disclosed.

While the number of visitors was down, vendor Mady Cripps was still having fun, keeping busy with a knitting project while she waited at her table.

"I live with my grandma and we were cleaning out some rooms," she explained.

'We have a bunch of stuff [we moved out] so that we could move some stuff around. And she's over there and we're just doing this together."

Outside, underneath a pop-up awning, Jodi Mangat from the Aldergrove Elks club was selling candles, baked goods and hanging baskets for sale for Mother's Day.

"This is a good place to come shop because there's a whole ton of stuff," Mangat commented.
