The Alzheimer Society of B.C. has help for Langley families trying to find a care home for a loved one with dementia.
Many families support a person with dementia at home. As the disease progresses, many will need to consider residential care.
“It can be an effective option,” said Sarah Stott-Eveneshen, an Alzheimer Society of B.C. support and education coordinator for Langley and the South Fraser area.
An Aug. 24 workshop can help families examine the issues around putting a person with dementia into residential care.
Change is required on everyone’s part. Caregivers can see their role change during the transition, and will need to learn to work effectively with a care team.
The Transition to, and Life In, Residential Care workshop is free from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Chartwell Renaissance Retire-ment Residence, 6676 203rd St.
It provides information topics such as how to assess long-term care facilities, and provides strategies for easing the transition. The workshop covers the role of the health authority and its case managers, and working with a care team.
“Participants will learn about the changes to their roles as caregivers that this transition can bring, and how to enhance their visits,” Stott-Eveneshen said.
