When Langley Lions President Nash Shivji needed some help to set up an online fundraiser for people displaced by the fire at the Lions Housing Society in April, he did what most people in his situation would do — he asked someone younger for assistance.
Shivji, 61, said most of the people in the club are around his age or older, so when the idea of doing something on the internet for the residents came up during a meeting, they all agreed it would be a great approach, but a were little unsure how to make it happen.
“Nobody had any idea, so we said how about we get in touch with the young people.”
Specifically, the Langley Leos Club, a youth organization of Lions Clubs International for people between 12 and 18.
Tushar Thakur, senior Leos vice president, said they decided a GoFundMe page was the best approach.
“We thought (it) a was a good means to collect donations as it is a public and very easily accessible forum,” Thankur said.
“Our club felt it was a very unfortunate incident for all those involved.”
The page has a goal of $5,000 to help people displaced by the fire purchase food and other personal necessities.
Shivji said all donations, large and small are appreciated.
‘“Most of the victims are elderly and I am hoping the generous residents of both of the Langleys will step up and donate generously.”
