Jagmeet Singh and the federal NDP have named Vanessa Sharma as their candidate for the upcoming byelection in the Cloverdale-Langley City electoral district.
The NDP said in a press release Sharma has a “long track record” of tackling climate change, working for better health care access, and advocating for more affordable housing.
“I’m excited to have Vanessa join the NDP team,” Jagmeet Singh, leader of the NDP, said in the release. “She’s dedicated to the fight to make life more affordable for everyday people.”
Singh said Sharma would fight for them and “not for billionaires.”
Sharma’s LinkedIn lists her as “VP Workers of Colour Working Group at Canadian Labour Congress - Advocating for Equity.”
The release notes Sharma also works with FortisBC in community engagement and she volunteers with a number of community organizations.
“Justin Trudeau and the Liberals have let people in Cloverdale-Langley City down. They promised to make life more affordable, and they broke that promise,” Sharma said in the release. “And the Conservatives have shown the people here that they don’t have a plan to help you. All they’ve got planned is more cuts. Cuts to health care, cuts to pensions, cuts to the services working people and our loved ones rely on.”
Sharma promised she would make a difference if elected.
“If I get the honour of being your Member of Parliament, I’ll fight every day to make your life easier and to lower costs.”
Sharma will face off against Tamara Jansen (Conservatives), Pat McCutcheon (Greens), and Madison Fleischer (Liberals).
