Being able to create art in a supportive gathering of fellow art lovers is one of the benefits of membership in the Aldergrove Art Club.
Plus there’s snacks.
Members take turns bringing treats for the coffee break.
“During that coffee time, we usually take a walk around and look at each other’s work,” said Hope Martens, the club’s publicity director.
Club membership over its lifetime typically runs about two dozen members, and the people need not be from Aldergrove to join.
The members gather weekly at the Aldergrove Heritage Hall, 3015 273rd St. at 1 p.m. Wednesdays for an afternoon of creativity.
“It’s social,” she noted. “We help each other with ideas.”
It’s always been that way since the club was created around 1969. The first gatherings were held in the home of Helen Poppy at 248th Street and Fraser Highway. For most of its life, the club has met at the hall, formerly the OAP hall.
Club membership is $50 annually, and members are asked to consider buying a hall membership for $20 per year for insurance coverage.
During summer months, the meetings move to outdoor locations, often members’ homes for plein air painting.
“We have a display at the Bradner Flower Show each year,” she added.
In decades past the club held art shows during the year, something the members are trying to bring back.
Martens herself is 74 but the club isn’t for older residents. The members are of all different ages. She added that any art medium is welcome. Over the years, there’s been members who have done bead art, fabric art, and more.
