Rotary is hosting a Mexican Fiesta with an Oktoberfest flavour this weekend.

The Rotary Club of Langley is hosting an Oktober Fiesta – apparently celebrating two cultures at one event.

This fundraiser, benefitting Langley Lodge, will feature live Mariachi music, Mexican folk dancing, silent and live auctions, and a Mexican feast.

The event is Saturday, Oct. 15, at 6 p.m. at the Coast Hotel and Convention Centre, 20393 Fraser Hwy. Tickets are $50 from langleyrotary@gmail.com, or 604-635-4410.

Winter blues

With a light layer of frost noted early this week, Metro Vancouver is hosting what’s dubbed Winter Warriors in Campbell Valley Regional Park on Saturday, Oct. 15

From 1 to 3 p.m., people eight years and older are invited to participate in a free stroll through the forest to discover the ways birds, animals, and plants combat the winter blues. Pre-registration required at 604-432-6359.

Pub on tap

Local grannies are lending a hand to fellow grandmothers in Africa by hosting a pub night in Fernridge.

The Langley Gogos, in aid of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign through the Stephen Lewis Foundation, are holding a burger and beverage night at the Artful Dodger Pub on Sunday, Oct. 16, 4:30 to 7 p.m.

Tickets are $20 and available at 604-534-6152 or carolealbertson@gmail.com.

Langley Pos-Abilities is also holding a fundraiser at Artful Dodger.

They’re holding a “true Oktoberfest celebration,” on Saturday, Oct. 22, said organization founder Zosia Ettenberg. The dinner will feature sausage, sauerkraut, German potato salad, and rye bread.

The fundraiser will run 5 to 10 p.m. and also include a silent auction. Tickets are $25 and available at 604-961-0117 or online under the Pos-Abilities calendar at pos-abilities.org.

Deadline looming

Artists of all ages are being invited to participate in what’s called an Incognito fundraising art event.

The Lngley Arts Council is inviting artists to sign up for this art show, being held at the Langley Township Civic Facility starting later this month.

The deadline to enter is Friday, Oct. 14, with the art being displayed from Oct. 28 to Dec. 16.

All pieces must be two dimensional unframed 12” x 12”x 1½” pieces, on wrapped canvas or cradleboard. Sculpture is not workable for this exhibit. There is a limit of three pieces per artist.

Each piece is priced at $100, with all proceeds split 50/50 between the artist and the arts council.

The name of the artist is hidden until the sale is made.

Organizers say they’re looking to build upon the success of the previous show in March, describing the show as one of the biggest of the year.

A reception is being organized for Nov. 4. More details to come.

In the meantime, more details about the criteria and the deadline are available online at: http://langleyarts.ca/face-to-face-with-the-lac/
