What inspires you about living in Canada? Is it the towering trees, calm lakes, boundless rivers or rolling prairies? Is it the diverse cultural landscape? Is it our natural heritage?

That question was posed to artists who use fabric as their medium, and according to Jasmine Moore, interim arts and heritage curator for the Langley Centennial Museum, “the results will invigorate your passion for Canada.”

Compiled into a collection called Canadiana, the travelling exhibition of 30 works generated by members of the Fibre Art Network (FAN) will be on display at the Langley Centennial Museum in Fort Langley until Nov. 10.

Using wool, cotton, silk, organza and felt, the artists featured in the exhibit illustrate how Canada generates a strong sense of identity through its unique environment, culture, and landscape.

“From the coasts of British Columbia, through the plains of the prairies, to the not so barren tundra of the Yukon, FAN artists explore the many facets of a Canadian sense of place,” Moore said.

Featuring an eclectic mix of natural, geographic, and cultural elements, the fabric art pieces reflect and inspire feelings of national pride.

“FAN artists embark on the slow art of fabric manipulation by stamping, stitching, painting, dying, blending textures and even printing on fabric to reflect the inspirational cultural elements, impressive forests, and meditative environmental landscapes of Canada,” Moore said.

FAN is a cooperative of professional fibre artists in Western Canada who showcase original creative fibre arts. Canadiana is FAN’s 13th show since the cooperative began in 2000.

The Langley Centennial Museum is located at 9135 King St.
