Langley-born comedian Simon King will perform at Sawbucks Pub on Sept. 30 in support of the Royal Canadian Theatre Company’s youth mentorship program.

It may be adult-only comedy, but it’s young people who will get the last laugh.

Stand up comic Simon King will bring his high-energy and sometimes risqué act to the stage at Sawbucks Pub in White Rock on Sunday, Sept. 30, in a benefit for the Royal Canadian Theatre Company’s youth mentorship program.

The Langley-born funny man is known for explosive performances offering sharp, socially conscious material and keen point of view. His material covers most anything and everything, jumping from topic to topic with a maniacal frenetic energy.

He has performed at the Las Vegas comedy festival, the L.A. Improve and The Comedy Store as well as making appearances on HBO, TBS and the Comedy Network.

King is doing the fundraiser in support of his mother’s Langley-based theatre company, which because of a lack of hometown facilities, must practise and perform outside the community.

“Unfortunately, because there is no theatre in Langley for us to use and, despite myself (director/writer), our musical director and one of our main actors/assistant director and a goodly number of other participants being Langley residents — we are forced to present elsewhere,” said RCTC founder Ellie King.

But no matter where the show goes on, there are bills to be paid.

“Our rent alone at Surrey Arts Centre is $32,000 this year, not to mention the costs of teaching and costuming our participants who range in age from three upwards, so the need to fund raise to keep our program going is paramount,” said King.

Currently, the company is rehearsing a production of Robinson Crusoe & the Pirates which is scheduled to open at the Surrey Arts Centre on Dec. 20.

Tickets to King’s Sept. 30 comedy show (19+ only) are $20. That includes a burger and a drink.

They are available at Sawbucks Pub, 1626 152 St. in advance or at the door.

Food will be served from 7 p.m., show begins at 8 p.m. Call 778-834-2993 for more info.
