Documentary screening inspires audience to embrace aging

Laurent Goldstein is showing his film Your Second Fifty at the Chief Sepass Theatre on Jan. 16.

Vancouver filmmaker Laurent Goldstein is coming to Langley to change the way people think about aging.

Goldstein is showing his documentary called Your Second Fifty: Rising Above the Fears of Aging at the Chief Sepass Theatre on Jan. 16.

Your Second Fifty was first released in 2016 by Goldstein’s production company called Citrus Pie Media Group, and the film explores the fear of getting older, with the intent to inspire people to live the second half of their lives fully.

‘The problem is, we are told and taught by society and doctors that when we age, we are supposed to slow down. [We are taught] that all these things show up like arthritic pain, and that it’s normal to have chronic pain. It’s not normal. We shouldn’t resign ourselves to that,” explained 63-year-old Goldstein.

The film came into fruition in 2016 after Goldstein met motivational speaker Frank Moffatt, who wrote the book that the film is based on.

Goldstein said he was “fascinated” by the topics of Moffatt’s book.

“I’ve always been fascinated by the concept of time, aging, our relationship and how we age, and thought ‘that sounds great.’”

In the film, experts discuss how to best cultivate the financial, physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of life while aging.

“To a great extent we have much more power than we think we have,” said Goldstein, who has been health-conscious for most of his life.

“In my late teens, I was already taking care of myself with naturopathic and homeopathic medicine, organic food, [and] vitamins.”

Goldstein added that the 40 speakers in his documentary offer audiences “little pearls of wisdom” on aging.

“If I can make even a very small difference, there is no greater satisfaction.”

The film features experts such as Dr. Bruce Lipton, Dr. John Demartini, Bob Proctor, David Wolfe, Naomi Judd, Dr. Daniel Amen, Bruce Allen, Arielle Ford, Aurora Winter, and more.

And while the film sets a large focus on aging, Goldstein added young audience members can also take away an important message.

“When I was younger, I didn’t pay attention to time going by nearly as much as now. Now I work more, and work harder, and am doing much more. I am excited with all the possibilities, there is so much to do. I’m so excited to be alive,” explained Goldstein.

‘The message for people who are younger is to maximize and do as much as they can.”

In addition to experts, motivational seniors also talk about their experiences with aging in the film, such as a 70-year-old woman who sailed solo around the world, and a 70-year-old man who climbed Mount Everest.

Your Second Fifty is Goldstein’s second documentary, and he is working on a third one titled Chronic Pain that is set to be released in the spring.

Your Second Fifty is being screened at the Chief Sepass Theatre at 9096 Trattle St. on Jan. 16.

Following the film is an expert panel discussion and a question and answer period about health and aging.
