TWU’s School of the Arts, Media + Culture (SAMC) presents Songs of the Night, a pair of concerts by the SAMC Chamber Singers in Langley and Vancouver.

SAMC's elite vocal ensemble performs hymns of longing and hope in an evening that promises to be both meditative and joyful.

Conducted by Joel Tranquilla, the concerts feature well-known pieces such as “Abide with Me,” a hymn by Jars of Clay, and a special treat: a selection of songs by collaborating composer Andrea Tisher.

Based in Richmond, Tisher uses rich texts by 18th century baptist hymn writer Anne Steele, a contemporary of Charles Wesley, to create music that is both haunting and hopeful.

Before the concert, audiences can get a taste of Tisher’s music at andreatisher.com.

Cindy Aalders is a featured guest at both concerts, providing musical commentary throughout the evening. Aalders, who recently completed a doctorate in philosophy at the University of Oxford, is a historian specializing in 18th century spirituality and is the foremost living scholar of Anne Steele’s writing.
