An instructor from Langley’s KPU campus is taking her musical talent to Vancouver in the upcoming show Aquarela do Brasil; An Explosive Celebration of Music and Dance.

KPU music instructor Jodi Proznick is playing the bass in the show at the Vancouver Playhouse from Nov. 8 to 9.

Over two nights, Proznick will help bring the sounds of Brazilian music and dance to stage.

“The musicians are amazing people and performers,” Proznick said. “The music is incredibly fun to play. It’s lyrical, rhythmic, dance, melody, and heart all rolled into one.”

Proznick has been playing the bass for 30 years and has a music degree.

At KPU she passes along her love and talent of music through classes in jazz history, jazz theory, popular music history, song writing, jazz ensembles, bass lessons and more.

Proznick calls her dive into the music world ‘accidental.’

She said her father was a band director in South Surrey, and needed a bass player.

“I didn’t see many other women playing the bass, so I thought that was kind of cool.”

Proznick has won numerous National Jazz Awards including Bassist of the Year in 2009 and 2009. Her group, the Jodi Proznick Quartet has also won multiple awards.

The show, which is hosted by the Vancouver Latin American Cultural Centre Society, is in honour of the 60th anniversary of the birth of Brazil’s esteemed Bossa Nova musical movement.

Aquarela do Brasil is on Nov. 8 and 9 at 8 p.m. at the Vancouver Playhouse on 600 Hamilton St., Vancouver.

Tickets can be purchased online.
