Students had 48 hours to make a short film in the Zoom Film Festival.

Langley students proved up to the challenge with local films winning various awards at a ceremony on the weekend in West Vancouver.

Charcoal created by Langley Fine Arts School students Duncan Ryans, Sun Joo Park, Angeles Paz, Katelyn Zarin, Sandy Cui and Maggie Pearce was named best overall film.

That award comes with a $70,000 scholarship.

Brookswood Secondary students submitted nine films for this year’s competition.

“Brookswood had it’s best year ever,” said teacher Robert French.

Out of a field of 92 films from around the province, BSS received 11 nominations for three films: Prism, Pizza Time and Greedy.

French noted that one of the judges singled out Prism for praise, saying “This film blew me away. It was gorgeous. The camera work was professional quality. And so were the lighting choices. This could have been at Cannes!”

LFAS won second place awards for best sound design and best art direction for Swallowfield, the 22nd. It was made by Lara Abad, Karl De Jong, and Izzy Cenedese. Shane Tick was nominated as best junior male actor.

LFAS film Kleptomaniac and What Friends Are For from R.E. Mountain Secondary were nominated in the junior category. In the senior category, nominations were given to the film Sara Bradley from Mountain secondary.

The festival started in 1999 as a way to foster creativity. The students must base their films on the theme and a certain prop. This year’s theme was there is no such thing as a free lunch and the prop was a CD.

The public may get to see the student works in a few months as part of the Langley School District Foundation’s film festival.

“The two films will likely be a part of the Langley International Film Festival in the spring, held annually at the Chief Sepass Theatre at the Langley Fine Arts School, usually late February,” French noted.
