Artist Nathan Schulz created this “Newspaper Star Bag” out of newspapers, flyers, recycled handles and a nylon beading cord. In total, 90 per cent of the materials used are recycled. His entry, under the youth category, is one of several on display at Willowbrook Shopping Centre as part of the 2018 Upcycling Design Challenge. Miranda Gathercole Langley Times

Recovered PVC pipe, 1,000 aluminum can tabs, newspapers, a broken saw blade and an old tire are on display at Willowbrook Shopping Centre as part of the 2018 Upcycling Design Challenge.

On until Sunday, April 29, the annual contest — hosted by the Township of Langley and Langley Arts Council — challenges artists to create new works of art out of recycled goods.

All pieces are made out of at least 75 per cent found or recovered material, with this year’s submissions featuring several that are 100 per cent upcycled.

Residents are encouraged to vote for their favourite piece for the ‘People’s Choice Award.’

Awards will be handed out on Thursday, April 26 from 6 to 8 p.m.
